Chapter 7

Adrian’s video lasted fifty-eight seconds.

He recorded it accidentally at first.

His phone was already filming the helmet boxes when Grant entered the equipment room with another employee.

Grant’s voice was clear.

“Anything with the old batch goes out today.”

The employee asked:

“What about the crash file?”

Grant responded:

“Vanessa handled it.”

Raffaele paused the video.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Adrian stood near the wall.

Raffaele noticed the boy watching his aunt rather than the screen.

“How long have you had this?”

“Two days.”

“Why didn't you come to me?”

Adrian’s lips pressed together.

He looked down.

Raffaele waited.

The boy finally said:

“I tried before.”

Raffaele’s chest tightened.

“When?”

“After Dad died.”

Adrian had told three adults he thought the helmet broke strangely.

One riding instructor.

One security officer.

And Vanessa.

Raffaele slowly turned.

Vanessa’s breathing stopped.

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“She told me grief makes people look for someone to blame.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Raffaele looked back at Adrian.

“And me?”

The boy's eyes lifted.

“You were angry all the time.”

The sentence landed without accusation.

That made it worse.

Adrian continued.

“Everybody said not to upset you more.”

Raffaele looked away.

He had thought grief made the family rally around him.

In reality, his grief had made people hide things from him.

Grant had benefited.

Vanessa had benefited.

Adrian had been silenced.

Then the independent safety engineer called.

The archived helmet fragments from Luca’s crash still existed in evidence storage.

Preliminary review found material inconsistent with the certified model listed on the rally inventory.

Raffaele’s fingers tightened.

The cheaper helmet was not simply the same supplier.

It might have been falsely labeled as a premium model.

The engineer promised a full comparison.

Before ending the call, he added one more fact.

Someone had requested that exact comparison eighteen months earlier.

Raffaele looked up.

“Who?”

The engineer checked.

“Vanessa Moretti.”

Adrian stared at his aunt.

Vanessa had investigated the helmet after Luca died.

And then told everyone there was nothing to investigate.
