Chapter 6

The replacement program began eleven days after Luca’s funeral.

No public recall.

No club announcement.

No notice to riders who had already received equipment.

Grant simply began swapping inventory.

New helmets arrived.

Old ones disappeared.

Invoices were altered to make it look like routine seasonal replacement.

Vanessa approved the payments.

Raffaele sat across from her.

His face was completely still.

“Why hide a recall?”

Her voice cracked for the first time.

“Because Grant said it would destroy the charity.”

Raffaele’s eyes narrowed.

“No.”

She swallowed.

“He said it would destroy his company.”

There it was.

Vanessa looked down.

Her hands had begun shaking.

“He had personally guaranteed the supplier contracts. If the defect became public before insurance responded, he would lose everything.”

“And Luca?”

Her eyes filled.

“I didn't know his helmet was defective before the crash.”

Raffaele believed that part.

He hated that he believed it.

“What did you know after?”

Vanessa pressed both palms against her knees.

“That there might be a problem.”

“You buried it.”

“I replaced the equipment.”

“You buried it.”

Her breath broke.

“Yes.”

The word barely reached him.

Then Raffaele asked:

“Why punish Adrian?”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

“He wouldn't stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Searching.”

Adrian had spent months trying to understand his father’s death.

He noticed old helmet photographs.

Serial labels.

Changed inventory.

Grant began realizing the boy was close.

Vanessa tried distracting him.

Then warning him.

Then dismissing him.

That morning Adrian finally took physical evidence.

Vanessa panicked.

“So you used Samuel, Jacob, and Rebecca.”

Her face tightened.

“I made them work.”

“You made three little children suffer so a twelve-year-old would surrender evidence.”

“I never told Grant to hit him.”

Raffaele’s stare sharpened.

“That is the line you chose?”

Vanessa’s shoulders collapsed slightly.

No answer.

Then the security director entered with Adrian’s photographs enlarged.

One showed Grant removing labels.

Another showed a cardboard box in the background.

Raffaele recognized the logo.

Old.

From Luca’s final charity rally.

They opened the archived inventory.

The batch number matched.

Then Adrian stepped into the doorway.

He looked smaller without his jacket.

His voice trembled.

“I have a video too.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward him.

Grant had not merely replaced labels.

Adrian had recorded him talking about why.
