Chapter 9

Adrian walked out.

Raffaele let him.

Then he followed five minutes later.

He found the boy behind the stables, sitting on a low wall.

No guards nearby.

No adults trying to fix him.

Raffaele sat several feet away.

Adrian stared at the ground.

“They knew.”

Raffaele took a breath.

“They knew there was a defect after the crash.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Adrian looked at him angrily.

Raffaele did not flinch.

“It isn't the same thing.”

His voice softened.

“But it is still a betrayal.”

Adrian’s eyes filled.

“Did the helmet kill Dad?”

“I don't know.”

“What if nobody ever knows?”

Raffaele looked toward the paddock.

“Then we live with what can be proven.”

Adrian hated that answer.

Raffaele could see it.

He hated it too.

Back inside, the safety engineer completed the comparative analysis.

Luca’s helmet had been falsely labeled.

It belonged to the lower-cost batch Grant’s company imported.

The shell failure likely worsened the head injury.

But investigators could not honestly conclude that a compliant helmet would definitely have saved him.

The truth was painful because it stopped short of certainty.

Grant seized on that.

“You hear that? You can't say I killed him.”

Raffaele watched him.

“No.”

Grant’s shoulders loosened.

Then Raffaele added:

“But somebody put a false certification label on the helmet.”

Grant’s breathing stopped.

The engineer agreed.

The label had not come from the manufacturer.

It had been applied later.

Grant looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa looked back.

Neither spoke.

Raffaele noticed.

Then Samuel wandered into the hallway carrying a helmet photograph Adrian had left behind.

The four-year-old pointed.

“I saw those stickers.”

Raffaele crouched.

“Where?”

Samuel thought.

“In Aunt Vanessa’s office.”

Vanessa went pale.

Raffaele slowly stood.

May you like

The false certification labels had not been hidden only inside Grant’s company.

They had been inside his own house.
