Chapter 14

Vanessa did not deny deleting the voicemail.
She sat in the same garden courtyard where the charity rally had collapsed months earlier.
No guests.
No motorcycles.
No Grant.
Only Raffaele.
Her hands rested in her lap.
“I heard it at six that morning.”
Raffaele stood several feet away.
“Why delete it?”
Her lips trembled.
“Because if you heard Luca question the helmets, you would cancel the rally.”
“Yes.”
“Grant would lose everything.”
Raffaele’s voice stayed quiet.
“So you chose for me.”
“Yes.”
“And for Luca.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The silence that followed was longer than any argument they had ever had.
Finally Vanessa whispered:
“I thought I was buying Grant twenty-four hours.”
Raffaele’s gaze hardened.
“You spent somebody else’s safety.”
She began crying.
Raffaele did not move.
Not out of cruelty.
Because comfort from him would allow her to escape the full weight of what she had admitted.
She removed her wedding ring.
Her fingers could barely manage it.
Then she held it out.
Raffaele looked at the ring.
He did not take it immediately.
Vanessa’s breathing shook.
“Is this over?”
Raffaele finally opened his hand.
“Yes.”
She placed the ring in his palm.
Her fingers stayed there for half a second.
Then withdrew.
No threat.
No revenge speech.
The punishment was simpler.
The marriage she had protected through lies no longer existed.
Grant lost all Moretti-linked contracts and management access while the legal, financial, and safety cases continued.
Vanessa lost her foundation roles.
Raffaele accepted review of his own actions at the rally and the governance failures that allowed family loyalty to replace oversight.
Before Vanessa left, she asked one final question.
“Will Adrian ever speak to me again?”
Raffaele looked toward the estate windows.
Adrian stood inside with Samuel, Jacob, and Rebecca.
“I don't know.”
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
Raffaele continued.
“And neither of us gets to decide for him.”
She nodded.
Then left.
Later that evening, Adrian approached Raffaele carrying the old helmet label.
He placed it on the table.
“I don't want this anymore.”
Raffaele looked at him.
“What do you want me to do with it?”
Adrian took a breath.
“Build the rally back.”
Raffaele frowned.
May you like
Adrian’s eyes were red.
“But make it something Dad would've wanted.”
