Chapter 11 - LUKE’S FIRST NIGHT AT VILLA TORRISI

Luke did not sleep at Villa Torrisi for months.
When he finally did, it was not because I declared a son should sleep under his father’s roof.
It was because he asked.
We had completed weeks of visits.
Parks.
Breakfast.
Aquarium.
One terrible afternoon at a children’s museum where he discovered buttons and refused to leave.
Then dinners at my house.
Grace present first.
Then nearby.
Then not.
Eventually Luke asked:
“Sleep Angelo house?”
He still called me Angelo.
Fine.
The therapist said one overnight could be reasonable.
I prepared like a military operation.
New bed.
Night-light.
Two kinds of cereal.
Three stuffed animals.
Grace arrived, looked around, and said:
“You know he can sleep on a mattress without a hospitality launch.”
I had no defense.
Luke slept four hours.
Then woke crying for Grace.
I called her.
Not because I failed.
Because he needed his mother.
She came.
Sat beside him.
He slept again.
No custody competition.
No masculinity crisis.
Then at breakfast he called me Dad accidentally.
“Dad, milk.”
All three adults froze.
Luke did not.
May you like
I gave him milk.
That was the entire ceremony.
