Chapter 24 - MILENA DIES

Milena died at eighty-six.
Stroke.
Two days in hospital.
Lucid for part.
Grace visited.
So did Luke.
I stayed overnight.
Near dawn, Milena looked at me.
“Did I ruin you?”
“No.”
“Grace?”
“No.”
“Luke?”
“No.”
Then I added:
“You hurt all three of us.”
She nodded.
Good.
No absolution through mortality.
Then:
“Your father would hate what I did.”
“Yes.”
A tear moved from the corner of her eye.
I did not soften.
She already knew I loved her.
Truth did not require pretending.
Then she said:
“I was afraid Stefan would pull everything backward.”
“I know.”
“I pulled something worse backward.”
“What?”
“Us.”
Yes.
She died that afternoon.
No secret codicil.
No final bank account.
May you like
No hidden second family.
Just the end of a complicated woman.
