Chapter 14 - THE NAME

At four, Luke asked why his name was Hale and mine was Torrisi.
Grace answered first.
“Because Hale is my name.”
Then he looked at me.
“You Torrisi.”
“Yes.”
“Can two?”
Possibly.
We did not decide then.
At six, he asked again.
By then he understood I was his father.
He liked both families.
Grace’s father had been a mechanic.
Her mother bookkeeper.
Luke knew their photographs too.
Eventually, with his input appropriate to age and legal approval, he became Luke Hale Torrisi.
Not because Torrisi outranked Hale.
Because he wanted both.
