Chapter 22 - LUKE MEETS HIS GRANDMOTHER ALONE

At eighteen, Luke asked Milena to lunch without Grace or me.
I hated it.
Did not stop him.
He was an adult.
They went to a small Italian restaurant near the estate.
Two hours.
Luke told me later only what he wanted.
He asked:
“Did you ever think I might need a father?”
Milena said:
“Yes.”
“Then why keep going?”
“Because every month made admitting the previous month harder.”
That sentence stayed with him.
Then:
“Did you hate Mom?”
“No.”
“Did you think she was beneath Dad?”
Long pause.
“Yes.”
There.
Class.
Status.
Old Mafia bloodline nonsense translated into modern prejudice.
Luke asked:
“Do you still?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
Milena answered:
“Because she had less money and more courage than I did.”

Luke liked that answer.
So did I.
