Chapter 8 - STEFAN KNEW SOMETHING

My cousin Stefan came to see me.

He had lost the chair vote three years earlier.

Still owned seventeen percent of Torrisi Holdings.

Still disliked me professionally.

Still family.

He closed my study door.

“I knew Grace was pregnant.”

My body went still.

“How?”

“Milena told me.”

“When?”

“After you became chair.”

“Why?”

“She was warning me not to use it.”

I stared.

He continued.

“She said you knew and had arranged support privately.”

False.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“Why?”

“I thought it was none of my business.”

That was almost honorable.

Then:

“Did you ever mention it to me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother told me you were ashamed.”

There.

Milena tailored lies again.

To Grace:

Angelo chose business.

To me:

Grace left.

To Stefan:

Angelo is handling it privately and does not want discussion.

Every person received a story designed around what would keep them quiet.

Then Stefan added:

“She told me the child might not be yours.”

Of course.

Ambiguity.

Enough to reduce urgency.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“For what?”

“I hated you enough back then that part of me enjoyed thinking you had a secret.”

Ugly.

True.

Then he surprised me.

“If I had known you didn’t know, I would have told you.”

I believed him.

That hurt too.

Because my rival might have protected me better than my mother if only he had been given the right fact.

Then the governance motive became clearer.

Milena had feared Stefan would use the pregnancy against me.

So she told him first, framing it in a way that neutralized him.

She did not merely hide.

She managed every likely threat.

Mafia instincts applied to family life.

Control information.

Control rooms.

Control outcomes.

The companies had modernized.

My mother had not.
