Chapter 6 - I DO NOT BECOME DAD IN A DAY

Luke did not call me Dad after the test.

Good.

Biology can arrive instantly.

Relationship cannot.

Grace and I met with a child therapist, a family-law mediator, and separate lawyers.

Not a council.

No capos.

No mother.

The initial plan:

Grace retained primary physical custody.

I received gradual parenting time.

Short visits first.

No overnight stays for several weeks.

Then one.

Then more if Luke adjusted.

Legal paternity acknowledgment filed properly.

Child support calculated under applicable law and our incomes.

I also created additional financial support voluntarily through counsel, but not as a condition on Grace.

No buying fatherhood.

No moving them into Villa Torrisi immediately.

No surname change.

Luke remained Luke Hale until and unless Grace and I later agreed otherwise and a court accepted any change.

Then the first visit.

Public park.

One hour.

Grace nearby but not hovering.

I brought nothing.

My instinct wanted toys.

A miniature car.

A train.

A ridiculous expensive jacket.

Therapist said:

“Bring yourself.”

Terrifying.

Luke looked at me.

“You picture Angelo.”

“Yes.”

“Mom says you my dad.”

I looked at Grace.

She nodded.

“Yes.”

He considered.

Then:

“Why gone?”

Three words.

No one had prepared me.

“I didn’t know about you.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Grown-ups made mistakes.”

Too vague.

But three-year-old truth needs small containers.

“Mom mistake?”

“No.”

“Grandma table?”

My chest tightened.

“Milena made a big mistake.”

Then:

“You?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I stopped looking for your mom when I should have tried harder.”

Grace looked at me.

She had not demanded that.

I owed it anyway.

Luke dug at the ground with one sneaker.

Then handed me a stick.

May you like

That was our first father-son activity.

Dirt.
