Chapter 12 - My cake problem

Seraphine needed medical treatment after the engagement party.

Not because cake is dangerous.

Because the fall caused a sprained wrist and bruised hip.

She also had a minor cut near her eyebrow from a broken sugar decoration.

No fracture.

No concussion.

I caused the sequence.

My lawyer advised immediate cooperation.

I gave a statement.

No self-defense claim.

Liora was safe before I touched Seraphine.

I had wanted to punish and humiliate her.

The prosecutor offered misdemeanor assault diversion because:

No prior conviction.

Limited injury.

Immediate cooperation.

No weapon.

Emotional context.

I accepted.

Conflict-management program.

Community service.

Restitution for medical expenses not covered by insurance.

No new offense.

Dismissal after completion.

Some Romano relatives were furious.

“You admitted guilt for defending Liora.”

“No.”

I corrected them every time.

“I defended Liora when I opened the door. The cake was retaliation.”

That distinction became important in my own house.

Liora asked:

“Was cake funny?”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

“It looked funny.”

“It probably did.”

“Was it bad?”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

Children are inconveniently sophisticated.

“Yes. Something can look funny and still be wrong.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Cake tasted bad anyway.”

Available joke.
