Chapter 18 - The main truth
The full truth was less cinematic than the engagement party.
Seraphine did not lock Liora away because she planned to kill her.
She did not want custody.
She was not stealing Liora’s inheritance.
She was not secretly working for a rival Mafia family.
She was using the engagement to expand her authority inside the Knox family.
She believed marriage to Evander Romano would transform her from one executive among several into the unavoidable bridge between two wealthy families.
She drafted continuity plans.
Promised influence she did not yet possess.
Told relatives that Victor and I supported arrangements we had not approved.
When Liora overheard pieces and repeated them, Seraphine saw her as a risk.
The first confinement was convenience.
Keep the child out of the room.
The second was control.
The third became punishment.
By the fourth, Seraphine had normalized the idea that Liora could simply be stored somewhere during parties with food, water, a pillow, and a blocked door.
She told herself:
The child is safe.
Therefore:
I am not hurting her.
That logic ignored fear.
Ignored consent.
Ignored the fact that a child pounding on a door was telling the adult exactly how safe she felt.
Seraphine also resented Liora.
Not because she existed.
Because Liora represented a boundary Seraphine could not negotiate.
I would leave meetings for her.
Change schedules.
Refuse late events.
Keep Alessandra’s memory visible.
Seraphine interpreted those facts as evidence she would always remain second inside my household.
Instead of admitting that insecurity, she labeled Liora:
spoiled.
nosy.
attention-seeking.
Those labels made confinement emotionally easier.
Victor’s decision to cancel the arrangement came from the governance scheme.
Not the child abuse.
He did not know about the locked room until the party.
That made his reaction more credible.
He was already withdrawing his support from the engagement because Seraphine had used family symbolism as unauthorized corporate power.
Then the hallway incident revealed a second pattern.
Control at work.
Control at home.
Different conduct.
Same instinct.
I had my own version.
The cake.
The impulse to turn humiliation into justice.
The assumption that anger gave me greater authority.
It did not.
