Chapter 26 - The bridal room becomes ordinary

Three years after the engagement party, we renovated part of the mansion.

The bridal room remained.

I considered removing it.

Liora said:

“Why?”

“I thought you might hate it.”

“It’s a room.”

There.

Children occasionally recover faster than architecture.

We changed the hardware.

No exterior chair could block the lever easily.

Interior emergency release.

The room became a general guest sitting room.

No wedding label.

Liora chose a blue sofa.

At eleven she used the room during a birthday party because the ballroom music was too loud.

I noticed the door closed.

My body reacted.

I walked over.

Stopped.

Then knocked.

“Liora?”

“WHAT?”

“You okay?”

“Yes!”

“Door unlocked?”

She opened it dramatically.

“Dad.”

“Sorry.”

“You’re being weird.”

“Yes.”

She stared.

Then:

“Can you close?”

I did.

That moment mattered.

A closed door chosen by Liora was not the same thing as a blocked door imposed by Seraphine.

Safety was not permanent openness.

May you like

It was agency.
