Chapter 3 - The room had been prepared
Police found no dungeon.
No restraints.
No hidden tunnel.
The bridal room was comfortable.
That did not make locking a child inside acceptable.
The room contained:
A couch.
Bathroom.
Window that did not fully open because of security stops.
Water.
A tray of food.
Blanket.
Pillow.
A small stack of coloring books.
The preparation mattered.
Seraphine’s first explanation was:
“Liora voluntarily used the room when overwhelmed by parties.”
Liora’s statement contradicted that.
So did the chair under the handle.
Detective Andrea Morales asked:
“Can the door normally be opened from inside?”
“Yes.”
“Then why the chair?”
Seraphine answered:
“She kept coming out.”
There.
The first legal truth.
Police did not immediately arrest her for kidnapping.
She had caregiver access in my home.
She did not transport Liora anywhere.
No injury requiring hospitalization.
Investigators considered unlawful restraint and child-endangerment theories.
The case would depend on pattern.
Duration.
Intent.
Liora’s statements.
Other evidence.
I faced my own questions.
“Did you push Ms. Knox’s face into the cake?”
“Yes.”
“Did she physically threaten your daughter at that moment?”
“No.”
“Did she physically threaten you?”
“No.”
“So why?”
“I was furious.”
My attorney, Evelyn Marks, stood beside me.
She did not interrupt.
The detective wrote.
Then:
“Did you cause her fall?”
“Yes.”
“Intentionally?”
“I pulled her backward. I did not intend the fall, but I caused the situation.”
Accurate.
My family’s oldest instinct was to minimize.
I refused.
That did not make me virtuous.
