Chapter 23 - Victor retires
Victor Knox changed after the scandal.
Not completely.
He remained difficult.
Proud.
Old-school.
But he stopped treating Seraphine’s future as a family project.
He did not secretly restore her authority after probation.
Did not demand relatives hire her.
Did not use money to create the illusion nothing happened.
She remained financially comfortable because she had savings and family assets.
He did not make her homeless.
He also did not buy her a replacement career.
She eventually worked for a boutique hospitality advisory company in a nonexecutive business-development role.
Lower pay.
Less authority.
Appropriate.
When Victor retired, he invited me to dinner.
“No photographers.”
“Good.”
He said:
“I used to think family alliances prevented conflict.”
“And now?”
“They move conflict into rooms where nobody knows which rules apply.”
I raised my glass.
“That may be the smartest thing a Knox has ever said.”
He glared.
