Chapter 24 - The party rule

I stopped bringing Liora to adult business functions for a while.

Then realized I was overcorrecting.

She enjoyed some events.

Loved desserts.

Liked seeing the orchestra.

Wanted to attend foundation dinners honoring her mother.

The answer could not become:

You were locked away once, therefore adult events are forever unsafe.

We created rules.

If Liora attended:

A named caregiver always knew where she was.

No adult other than me or her designated caregiver could remove her to another room without telling both.

Any quiet room remained openable from inside.

No child used as decoration for family diplomacy.

She could leave when she wanted.

At eleven, Liora used the rule aggressively.

One gala:

“Dad, I’m done.”

“We just arrived.”

“Rule.”

“Fine.”

I sent her home with Maya.

Rules become real when they inconvenience the person who wrote them.

Good.
