Chapter 19 - Seraphine’s plea

The criminal case resolved thirteen months after the engagement party.

No kidnapping conviction.

No twenty-year sentence.

Seraphine pleaded guilty to a felony-level child-endangerment/unlawful-restraint offense under a negotiated resolution.

Factors:

Five separate confinements.

The child’s age.

Blocking the door from outside.

Increasing durations.

Liora’s fear.

No significant physical injury.

Food and water supplied.

No prior criminal record.

Treatment participation.

Acceptance of responsibility.

Sentence:

Seventy-five days local custody.

Remaining term suspended.

Two years supervised probation.

Mandatory child-development and behavioral-control treatment.

No direct contact with Liora during supervision without court modification, therapeutic recommendation, and my consent.

Community service.

Restitution for counseling expenses attributable to the incidents.

No unrelated-minor caregiving during supervision without approval.

At sentencing Seraphine said:

“I locked Liora in the room because I did not want her interrupting conversations.”

There.

“I knew she wanted out.”

There.

“I told myself food, water, and comfort made the confinement harmless.”

There.

Then:

“I became angry that Evander always prioritized her, and I treated that resentment like permission.”

There.

The judge asked:

“Did an eight-year-old child have responsibility for your position in her father’s household?”

Seraphine cried.

“No.”

That answer mattered more than any speech.
