Liora eventually asked what Mafia meant.
Not because I planned a disclosure.

“Are you Mafia?”
I answered carefully.
“Our family has organized-crime history.”
“You?”
“I grew up inside parts of that world.”
“Did you kill people?”
“No.”
“Did you order?”
“No.”
“Did you do illegal stuff?”

“When I was younger, I participated in business environments where I accepted things I should have questioned, and some people around me committed crimes.”
She frowned.
“That sounds lawyer.”
Fair.
“I have made choices I regret. I have also spent much of your life moving our businesses toward systems where nobody, including me, can simply order around rules.”
“Because Seraphine?”
“Before her. More after.”
She thought.
“Are people scared of you?”
“Some.”
“Me no.”
“Good.”
