Chapter 15 - Liora asks about marriage

Liora believed the canceled engagement was her fault.
Of course she did.
“If I didn’t tell you, you marry?”
My chest tightened.
I sat beside her.
“The engagement already had serious problems before that night.”
“Because Seraphine bad?”
“Because adults disagreed about important things.”
“Then me?”
“You told me something I needed to know.”
“She got arrested because me?”
“No.”
“Because room?”
“Because of choices she made.”
Liora stared at the floor.
“Victor sad?”
“Yes.”
“Seraphine sad?”
“Probably.”
“Are you?”
Hard.
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
“You miss her?”
“Parts.”
“But she hurt me.”
“Yes.”
Children want clean emotional loyalty.
Love is rarely clean enough.
“I can miss parts of someone and still know they cannot be in our life.”
Liora leaned against me.
“Complicated.”
“Yes.”
“I hate complicated.”
“So do most adults.”
We sat there.
