Chapter 17 - Seraphine’s father chooses Liora
Victor requested permission to meet Liora.
Not alone.
Not immediately.
Three months after the engagement.
He had known her socially for over a year.
She called him Mr. Knox.
He said:
“I don’t want her to think every Knox is unsafe.”
I asked Liora’s therapist.
Then Liora.
“Do you want to see Victor?”
“Seraphine’s dad?”
“Yes.”
“Is he mad at me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He thinks Seraphine was wrong.”
She thought.
“Okay.”
We met at a public garden.
Victor brought no gift.
Good.
He told Liora:
“I am sorry my daughter locked you in a room.”
Liora asked:
“Did you tell her?”
“No.”
“Did Daddy?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Victor took a breath.
“She made that choice herself.”
Good.
Then Liora asked:
“Did you cancel wedding?”
Victor looked at me.
I nodded.
“I asked your dad to end the arrangement before the party because Seraphine was using the engagement to make business decisions she had no right to make.”
Liora frowned.
“Business?”
“Yes.”
“Boring.”
Victor laughed for the first time in months.
“Extremely.”
That meeting mattered.
Not because Victor became a substitute grandfather.
